Great news! SHAPE Washington is working with the Professional Educators Standards Board (PESB) to propose a new Adapted Physical Education Specialty Endorsement for the state of Washington. Physical Education and Special Education teachers may soon be able to add an Adapted Physical Education Specialty Endorsement to their teaching certification to further support students with disabilities in physical education.

What does this mean? – SHAPE WA and Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) are teaming up to develop an Adapted Physical Education Specialty Endorsement for educators to gain comprehensive training on adapted physical education essential learnings that support ALL our students in physical education.
 

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS? Essential Learnings are created by teacher experts from all schools, and they articulate the skills, content, and concepts aligned with state standards. Essential Learnings ("ELs") determine the non-negotiable areas of proficiency to be attained by ALL educators seeking the endorsement:

​• Programs will use the ELs for pre-service or in-service teachers seeking to obtain their adapted physical education specialty endorsement.
• Washington State uses the ELs to develop the content assessment which educators must
take to earn a specific endorsement.
• These ELs are for pre-service and current physical education or special education teachers
who will be earning their adapted physical education specialty endorsement; they are NOT student learning standards/outcomes.

OUR ASK – We are looking for community organizations, pre-service teachers and current educators for feedback on the Essential Learnings for Adapted Physical Education. We want to hear what you think would help prepare our educators in supporting diversity, equity, and inclusionary practices.

and a copy of the draft essential learnings will be sent to those registered for their specific day and time.
